Gender Monitoring

Providing a Data Set for Gender Equality Efforts at ETH

With the 2009/10 Gender Monitoring report, which was published in 2010, the Office of Equal Opportunities for Women and Men provided for the first time a detailed report on gender equality in studies and science at ETH Zurich. The report will be updated on an annual basis in October, focusing on different aspects every year.

The Gender Monitoring report serves, on the one hand, as a tool to check if ETH is on track with regard to its strategic goals in the area of gender equality. On the other hand, the report provides a data set allowing ETH to promote young female scientists more efficiently in the future, recognize any changes regarding the situation of gender equality and, if necessary, react appropriately to such changes. For a better understanding of the context in detail, complementary studies are carried out.

Survey of Matura Graduates

In 2011, we carried out a survey among Matura graduates from Swiss upper secondary schools. We wanted to determine the reasons why students chose certain study subjects in the MINT area and why they chose a certain university to study such a MINT subject. Based on this knowledge, we aim to develop specific measures to win young women over to study MINT subjects and convince them that ETH is the right place to study the MINT subject they choose.

Exit Survey

In the period from January 2011 to October 2012, we surveyed scientists who have left ETH Zurich after their doctorate or at a later point of time in their career. We asked them to give a feedback on why they leave ETH Zurich, where they are going and what image of the ETH Zurich they take with them. The main results of our survey can be found here.
